Breakfast After the Bell
Breakfast After the Bell is a school-based program that provides breakfast to students after the official start of the school day, rather than before. This approach removes barriers to traditional breakfast programs such as transportation issues or morning routines that prevent many students from eating a traditional breakfast.
How it works
“Grab and Go” premade breakfast bags with healthy low sugar breakfast items are available at the mobile school food pantry or classrooms for students to access.
Benefits
Improved Academic Outcomes: BAB is linked to better student focus, higher test scores, and improved reading and math skills.
Reduced Hunger and Attendance Issues: Students are less likely to be hungry, leading to fewer visits to the nurse and reduced absenteeism.
Increased Participation: Shifting the time and location of breakfast delivery makes it more accessible, significantly boosting access to nutritious meals.
Equity: Universal programs reduce stigma, ensuring more students, particularly those from low-income families, can access a nutritious meal.
